How to Add Product Personalisation to Your Shopify Store

A step-by-step guide to setting up product customisation options in Shopify — from choosing the right app to configuring option types and live previews.

Why product personalisation matters

Stores that offer product personalisation see 23% higher average order values and 18% better conversion rates than stores that don't. Customers pay more for products that feel uniquely theirs.

The challenge is setting it up correctly. Shopify's built-in product variants are limited to 3 options with 100 values total — far too restrictive for most personalised product businesses.

Step 1: Install Customiras

Customiras is a Shopify app that adds 25+ option types to any product page. Install it from the Shopify App Store — there's a 14-day free trial, no credit card required.

After installing, you'll be taken to the Customiras admin dashboard.

Step 2: Create your first option set

An "option set" is a collection of options that appear on a product page. For a personalised mug, for example, you might have:

  • A text field for the customer's name
  • A color swatch for mug color
  • An image upload for a custom photo
  • A dropdown for mug size (11 oz / 15 oz)

In the Customiras admin, click New Option Set. Give it a name and start adding options.

Step 3: Configure each option type

Each option type has its own configuration:

Text options — set a character limit, placeholder text, and whether it's required.

Color swatches — add values with hex codes. Customiras renders them as clickable colored circles.

Image upload — set accepted file types and maximum file size. Customiras handles storing the upload and attaching it to the order.

Dropdown — add values. Each value can have its own price modifier (e.g., "Large +$5").

Step 4: Set up conditional logic

Conditional logic lets you show or hide options based on what the customer selected. For example, show an "Engraving text" field only when the customer selects "Add engraving" from a checkbox.

In the option set editor, click Conditional Logic and create a rule.

Step 5: Enable live preview

If you sell products where customers want to see their personalisation before buying, set up a live preview canvas.

In the option set editor, go to Preview Config. Upload a product image and define zones where customer text or photos will appear. Customers see changes in real-time as they fill in their options.

Step 6: Test on your storefront

After saving your option set, assign it to a product and preview it on your storefront. Test each option type, check that conditional logic works, and verify that options appear on the order confirmation.

Result: more conversions, higher AOV

Merchants who add personalisation options with a live preview typically see a 15–30% increase in conversion rate for those products, plus higher average order values because customers value bespoke items more.
